Why Do People Snore?

Have you gotten complaints from people you sleep with about your snoring? While it may be funny at times and a common occurrence to everyone, snoring can be a serious health hazard, if taken for granted.

The problem is, those who snore in sleep aren’t even aware of it. Let alone knowing how to prevent snoring.

A universal problem men and women of all ages, and it can become even worse as we age. Over 90 million Americans snore, 37 million of which snore regularly. Imagine if all 90 million snored at the same time, what kind of noise would it generate? But I digress.

Why do people snore? It’s a rather simple reason, turbulence. When the air passage is blocked and air rushes down a tube, it creates a vibration on the tissue causing a cadence and then a noise that we have come to identified as snoring.

This happens when the body and the muscles surrounding the throat are at their most restful positions. This explains why though we literally breathe the whole day, only during sleep do we experience snores.

It is evident that those who are overweight have a tendency to snore as the extra amount of fat causes an obstruction and blocks the airways to the back of the throat while sleeping.

Excessive intake of alcohol is also blamed for the reason why people snore in sleep. The main reason is that alcohol causes the throat muscles to relax, and the tongue to drop to the back of the throat which causes an obstructed airway. When the air passes through the back of the tongue, it causes vibration and leads to the familiar noises of snoring.

If you wake up not feeling rejuvenate as you should be, this a sign that you have been snoring but many have learned to disregard it.

How Can I Stop Snoring?

Some will usually just brush snoring off as nothing, but it would be in their best interest to see if they can get something done to reduce it or get rid of it altogether if possible.

If you already deal with snoring, or think that you will be prone to snoring – the best way to fight against it is prevention.

Stopping snoring before it starts can help you to keep it from happening. Most sufferer will think that they have to live with snoring or that it can not be prevented, but that is totally true.

There are in fact ways to stop snoring. Some of them, but not limited to, are

  1. Lose weight. Sometimes, being obese and having excess weight and fat on your frame can contribute greatly to snoring. Dropping pounds can help you to either reduce or get rid of snoring.
  2. Sleep in a different position. In some cases, sleeping on your back can cause your tongue to fall back, which can cause an obstruction of the airway – leading to snoring. Sleeping on your side and/or elevating your head when sleeping may be able to help.
  3. Make sure that your nasal passages are cleared out. If you have a cold or persistent allergies, this can cause your nose to be clogged and can lead to snoring when you are sleep. There are many products on the market that can help you to clear out your passages.

Like the answer to any disease known to man, maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle is still best way to prevent snoring. The benefit of living such does not only affect your sleep but also your entire wellness.

So the next time someone tells you that snore in sleep, consider it a sign of caution and a start to choose the healthy way of living.
